Losing a tooth can be a startling and painful experience, but knowing the right steps to take can increase your chances of saving it. A tooth can be knocked out due to accidents, sports injuries, or unexpected impacts, and acting quickly is essential. Here’s a guide on what to do if you or someone you know loses a tooth.
First and foremost, take a deep breath to calm yourself, then try to locate the tooth. If it’s a child’s baby tooth, consult a dentist before attempting to place it back since baby teeth aren’t usually re-implanted. However, if it’s a permanent tooth, the sooner you act, the better your chances of saving it.
When picking up the tooth, hold it by the crown (the chewing surface) rather than the root. The root contains delicate cells that can help reattach the tooth to the gums, so it’s essential to avoid touching or damaging it. If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with milk or saline solution. Avoid scrubbing or using soap, as these can harm the cells on the root surface.
If possible, gently place the tooth back in its socket. Align it properly with the other teeth, then hold it in place by biting down gently on a piece of gauze or a clean cloth. Replacing the tooth in its natural position can increase the likelihood of it reattaching.
If reinserting the tooth isn’t possible, keeping it moist is crucial. Place the tooth in a small container of milk or a saline solution, or in an emergency, use saliva by placing the tooth in your cheek pouch. Avoid storing the tooth in water, as this can damage it.
Time is critical after a tooth is knocked out. Try to see a dentist within 30 minutes to an hour, as reimplantation success decreases with time. Many dental clinics provide emergency services, so call ahead to ensure they can assist as soon as you arrive.
After your dentist has addressed the issue, follow any care instructions provided. This may include avoiding certain foods, using prescribed mouth rinses, or attending follow-up visits to monitor the reattachment progress.
Although losing a tooth can be distressing, knowing the proper actions can make a difference in saving it. Quick, careful handling and prompt dental care give you the best shot at preserving your natural smile.
